The easy way to tell between a mechanical shift & hyrdo-mechanical shift drive is that the hydro-mechanical ones DO NOT have the visible anode square chunk next to the six little holes on each side toward the rear of the lower unit

This was used on 1974-1992 Various 35hp 40hp

You could always put some shrink tubing over that area or that liquid electrical tape

NOT the older style 2-piece rear main oils seal found on some of the early 1985 & 1986 engines
